On the bright side, Daedalic announced a partnership with NACON to help develop and distribute Gollum when it does release. The official press release mentions this partnership will “ensure that the game will meet the expectations of fans of The Lord of the Rings and fully leverage the power of the new generation of consoles.”
Daedalic first announced Gollum in 2019 as a game for “all relevant consoles,” though it’s possible developing Gollum for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S threw up an unexpected roadblock for the long-awaited game.
Gollum follows the unseen journey of the creature Gollum (obviously) and tasks players with deciding which facet of his personality — the twisted Gollum or kindly Smeagol — wins the fight for dominance. How that plays out isn’t quite clear, but then again, neither is much about the Gollum game.
The game’s official Steam description says it follows Gollum from his imprisonment in Mordor to his infiltration of Mirkwood and beyond. It’s a stealth game of sorts, but one where player choice in how Gollum navigates obstacles and takes out enemies has some kind of important effect.
Whether this means Daedalic plans on turning Gollum into Middle Earth’s own Agent 47 or we’ll be doing quick time events to bite off hobbit fingers, we’ll just have to wait and see.
